Perilla frutescens, is a member of the Lamiaceae/Labiatae family and commonly called perilla. Perilla is produced by many countries including China, India, Japan, Korea, Thailand, other East Asian countries. The herb is about 1 m high with small flowers, a gray-brown fruit, and glossy, downy-haired leaves. Cultivation of the crop is grown from seed and sown in May. Harvesting is usually between the end of September and beginning of October. The applicable parts of perilla plants are the leaves and seeds. There are two main types: red and green perilla. A research study (2013) entitled “Effects of perilla oil on plasma concentrations of cardioprotective (n-3) fatty acids and lipid profiles in mice” published in Nutrition Research and Practice concluded “In summary, perilla oil, a native product of Korea, currently used as a raw material for delicacies like bibimbab, increased cardioprotective DPA and EPA contents in the plasma of mice. Accordingly, it is possible that perilla oil can substitute for fish oil or imported flaxseed oil as an alternative cardioprotective vegetable oil. Finally, conduct of further studies will be necessary in order to elucidate the effects of perilla oil on plasma DHA and EPA concentrations in humans.”.

A research study (2014) entitled “Perilla oil improves blood flow through inhibition of platelet aggregation and thrombus formation” published in Laboratory Animal Research concluded “The results indicate that perilla oil inhibit platelet aggregation by blocking thromboxane formation, and thereby delay thrombosis following oxidative arterial wall injury. Therefore, it is proposed that perilla oil could be a good candidate without adverse effects for the improvement of blood flow”.

A research study (1997) entitled “Perilla oil prevents the excessive growth of visceral adipose tissue in rats by down-regulating adipocyte differentiation” published in The Journal of Nutrition concluded “These results suggest that perilla oil or (n-3) PUFA prevents excessive growth of adipose tissue in rats at least in part by suppressing the late phase of adipocyte differentiation”.
