Recent research confirmed a synergistic relationship between vitamin K2 and vitamin D3 in promoting bone and cardiovascular health. Vitamin D3 enhances the absorption of dietary calcium from the gut and its deposition in bones. Excessive absorption of calcium or high levels of calcium in blood may lead to its deposition in blood vessels including coronary arteries which may result in calcification of these blood vessels and thus increasing the risk of atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries).
Vitamin K2 activates a protein called “osteocalcin” and this activated protein enhances the deposition of absorbed calcium into the mineral matrix of the bones. Vitamin K2 activates a protein called “GIa” or “MGP” and this activated protein prevents the deposition of excessive calcium in blood vessels taking into consideration that calcification of arteries is a major cause of atherosclerosis.
